Vorsprung durch common-sense

Reviewer: rockstro,
Despite Amazon's inability to spell `vacuum' correctly, my confidence was sufficiently high in this product to make me go ahead and buy one. After several decades of struggling with various makes of Hoover, Panasonic and Dyson, all the while cursing their idiotic design and practical flaws, the Sebo X4Xtra is based on common-sense and is the first such machine actually to alleviate my grumblings. Nonetheless, it was annoying to discover, upon ripping open its packaging, that this pristine blue and yellow contraption needed to be assembled on my disgustingly dirty kitchen carpet before I could try it out. Its Teutonic construction, however, was followed through by similarly efficient instructions and a cross-head screw-driver was required only once to attach a brush to the main handle.

Be warned when first using this Sebo -- its self-propelled forward action took me by surprise, whisking me off at speed across the floor, much to the alarm of my unsuspecting cats. But this feature renders it light and easy to manoeuvre around corners and into edges that no machine has ever reached before. Its sensible design has the cord attached near the top of the main handle, thus making it easy to keep the cable under control and lower the chances of running it over in the quest to remove every speck of dust. In terms of its cleaning capabilities an attractive, but impossible to vacuum, striped rug in my sitting room passed the Sebo's power test with flying colours; no other system has managed ever to return this piece of floor covering to its original fluffless glory.

The seemingly complicated spaghetti of solid hoses tuck themselves neatly out of sight when not being used, and its accessories are attached sensibly so that they don't fall off at the slightest bump. Cunningly its brushes detect whether or not they need to be employed, according to floor surface and carpet depth. Unlike my old Dyson which is just too wide and certainly too bulky to reach under many bits of furniture, the Sebo's low head carriage minimises irritating chair removal sessions thus speeding up the daily vacuum whip-round "to get rid of the worst ... "

The only downside to this magnificent piece of German engineering is that considerable effort is required to carry it up and down stairs. Again, unlike the Dyson, there is no obvious handle to grasp for such vertical activity and, to make this chore more onerous, the Sebo is heavy. I suppose I shall have to buy a second one for upstairs.
Probably the best vacuum cleaner in the world...

It was only this morning that I realised that Amazon sold vacuum cleaners - because my SEBO X4, which is about 8 years old, seemed to have broken down. Our fault, I think - we had allowed the brush to get jammed by a build up of hair and dust, and when I decided that nothing to lose by dismantling it I realised that the belt driving the brush had been damaged and had come off. It's working again now, and therefore I shall not have to make another substantial investment just as yet.

This does give me the opportunity to say that this is indeed as good a machine as everyone says it is. It is extraordinary that it has lasted as well as it has. Perhaps it is not, therefore, so surprising that the model being sold today looks very much the same now as it was eight years ago - they got it right some time ago. The automatic height adjustment still works well, and the only irritation is that the foot pedal that allowed you to lower the handle for vacuuming has come off so that you have to lean down to release it. My wife would complain that it is a little heavy, but I'm sure that there are heavier.

I bought this from a local stockist and repairer after buying a number of cheaper models that lasted only a year or so each. When I asked him about buying a Dyson, which I was considering and which he also sold, he said that he loved people who bought Dysons because they would be back again soon to get it repaired. He recommended Sebo even though his ongoing sales would be lower. So it has proved for me! A thoroughly recommended machine.

My wife and I are absolutely delighted with this cleaner. A little on the heavy side but well worth the effort of carrying it upstairs. We have had quite a few vacuum cleaners, mostly Electrolux; but unfortuantely they have changed and not for the better. A friend purchased one of these Sebo's that we had never heard of before, and after looking at the reviews we decided to get one. Its the best purchase that we have ever made and can well recommend them to anyone who is thinking of buying a new vacuum cleaner. Because you don't have to change the bags or empty everytime you use it, it pays for itself with its cleanliness. Just put the bag in and vacuum, no messy emptying till the bag is full, great, better than the bagless vacuum cleaners too.
Far better than Dyson

Bought one of these March 2009 and have only just changed the dust bag for the first time! We probably don't clean as much as we should, but even so it beats messing about emptying "bagless" cleaners every few weeks. I've had two Dysons before and while James Dyson prides himself on product engineering I'm afraid the Sebo is in a different league. It doesn't try to be quite so clever or "different" as Dyson (after all, how did we manage before they brought out those ball cleaners?), but the build quality and performance are excellent.

It's not perfect - it's easy to tip it over when using the attachments. However, that's a price well worth paying for something that feels and performs like it's been really well designed. When I was choosing it I read that many hotels insist on using these and I can see why.
