Reviewer: J. A. Saunders,
My previous model was the DC05 which was excellent so when the motor blew after many years I decided to upgrade to a newer model. A big disappointment, its much heavier, no greater suction and the biggest moan is that the tools fix straight into the end of the hose with no swivel. This makes the tools difficult to use as the hose is very stiff and to position the tool at certain angles like dusting you have remove it from the hose and refit at the right angle. The DC05 had a swivel on the end which made it much easier to use.
The powered brush is getting slower and slower and will need replacing, the clip that holds the wand to the machine has spread so the wand drops off when you put the cleaner away. In all the DC05 was better.
Brilliant Dyson DC20 Animal Stowaway

I cannot believe how much dog hair this machine lifts from the carpet with one sweep. My other machine (a Thomas) lifts a lot of hair but I would have to go over and over the carpet and it is twice as heavy. I have read reviews that the Dyson is heavy but I have not found it so.It sits really well on the stairs. The hose fits to a clip on the front so it is easy to manoeuvre. Does the job in half the time.

The turbo head on this model can be adjusted for carpets and hard floors so you don't have to change the head. But if you want to use the hard floor tool, it is so easy. There is also a mini turbo brush which is great for the car. All the small tools clip to the front of the machine. I was a bit confused setting the machine up but once you get the idea, you can appreciate what a brilliant design it is. It is so easy to wrap up and stow and also easy to take out and use, with the minimum of fuss.

Lifetime filters and no bags to buy. It pretty sturdy. I don't think bits will snap off. I cannot fault it. Got a great price on Amazon.co.uk too
This product really sucks!

I was in 2 minds about buying a Dyson, I have heard such horror stories about reliability. However, after reviewing the Which? reviews of vacuum cleaners, Dyson got quite good ratings. What finally swung it was the newly introduced free 5 year guarantee, which no-one else offers (as far as I know). I also like the fact you don't need bags or paper inserts, which can dramatically push up the cost over the life of the machine.

Having used this machine now for a year or more, I am very pleased with it. The build quality is very good, in fact the materials used seem very high quality, it just feels good compared to other machines I looked at. I also like all the attachments that are stored by clipping onto the machine itself. It is very compact for storage, and lives on a shelf in my kitchen cupboard. It performs extremely well at picking up pet hair - which was my main requirement, as well as general cleaning. It is good for stairs, being small and compact, and the flex is long enough to reach to the bottom. There are also extra attachments you can buy for specific jobs, the dusting brush is very good. It does already come with a wide array of heads and attachments.

My only niggle is that the dust compartment is quite small and has to be emptied frequently, however I would rather have that than a bigger machine which takes more storage, so no complaints really. Emptying the dust compartment is very easy and creates no mess.

Excellent product, highly recommended.
Excellent cleaning

This is our third Dyson. We began way back with a DC02 which is still working fine. We then got a turquoise one (can't recall the model number)and the carpet head didn't seem to clean to the edges very well so has been sent upstairs for occasional quick vacuuming inbetween taking this model up for more thorough vacuuming.
When we got the DC20 we noticed the carpet head works much better. I was told by Dyson that the head on our previous one had been contracted out to another factory, and they'd realised that they weren't as efficient.
I only have two grumbles about this one: the dust collecting container isn't always easy to open for emptying and I've had a face full of dust a couple of times. I also wish this was easier to completely clean/dust out too, and tend to spray kitchen cleaner into it and let it stand for a while, then blast it with warm tap water and rinse it out before putting it somewhere to dry (a fine day outside is best).
The other thing I don't like is that the hose, being set on one side tends to overbalance it when not being pulled along in a straight line and it falls over.
Nothing is totally perfect, and I'd still buy another Dyson because they generally clean so very well, give very little trouble, are long lasting and Dyson are very helpful if there is a problem.
Powerful but some design weaknesses

Reviewer: Bob,
This cleaner copes with anything our Labrador can throw at it so that is a fair demonstration of its power. Much is made of the fact that these machines are bagless however I am not convinced of the advantage (other than cost) over disposable bags as cleaning the dust container is not the easier of tasks. It would have helped if Dyson had provided a brush which could reach into the gaps to clean the container (a bottle brush is the nearest I can find). Also I am not sure how well the handle will last as there feels quite a bit of movement on it.
