really efficient, but heavy

This is a really efficient cleaner, coping easily even with stubborn dog hair, dust, and the tools make access to awkward corners easy. At first i was delighted, despite the fact it was much heavier than our last light, but rather weakly-powered cleaner (an Oreck). However, as time has gone by, I've found that the belt has developed a growing habit of slipping off the spindle, and its very fiddly to get into the mechanism to remedy this; this is also when the sheer weight of the thing makes manouvering it to dismantle then reassemble it, even worse. If the weight issue doesn't worry you (not fun lugging it upstairs), ie you're young and fit, then the only concern is whether my problem with the belt is a 'one-off', because this is a very efficient, powerful machine.
Good

It is good, and looks quite good, but it's not great. My old hoover was a Dyson and I loved it. It was good looking and very powerful. The Vax certainly picks up the dog hairs but it just doesn't have the same 'something' as the Dyson. The dirt container comes off very easily (that is a positive btw) and the method of emptying is quite simple, but ingenious. The container doesn't hold much however and you have to keep emptying it.... The position (very low) of the cable is a nuisance and unless you remember to put it over the hook at the top you are in danger of running over it. SO...not very happy with it. It might be going to Ireland to my daughters and I will get my Dyson back out of hibernation !
Expected mediocre - got a good machine!

Reviewer: Dr Shrempy,
I was a long time Dyson user (since DC01) and would have had another Dyson, but i couldn't justify the cost this time round. After much research I plumped for this one. In one sentence - No regrets buying this over a Dyson. The good points first: 1) Excellent suction - really lifts up the carpet. 2) Great on laminate floors as you can switch the brush off, but I found it works just as well with the brush on! 3) Retractable cord - great and I don't find the cord too short as others have said, as you only hoover one room at a time, then re-plug into the next room. 4)Brilliant emptying feature. 4) £100 you cant go wrong really - at the end of the day it's a hoover - why pay more?

There are no real bad points, more "liveable grumbles" so to speak. 1) The hose is OK for my stairs but i can see why some people might want more length. 2) Having to clip the hose to the bottom of the machine to prevent it falling over works well, but its an extra thing to do when I dont really want to do it! 3) The tools storage is a bit fiddly and I wish the bristles on the wand were longer. 4)Nothing has fallen off or broken so you could say the build quality is good, although it does creak a bit, but as long as it stays unbroken it can creak all it wants!

All in all an excellent machine and thoroughly recommended + a good warranty on it.
Dust collection capacity too small, hose awkward to use

Review Date: July 17, 2010
Reviewer: Milliway,
The dust collection capacity was very small, and filled up in no time. It was described on Amazon web site as 3 litres, but the specification in the user manual says 2 litres.

The hose was difficult to detach and use, it needs to be hooked on to the bottom of the cleaner to avoid tipping over. This is fiddly to do, and shortens the usable hose length.

I would not recommend this vacuum cleaner to anyone.

rubbish hose!!

bought after reading good reviews. do not buy this vacuum!!
1) the hose is so short long enough to clean to a height of about 3 stairs after that you need to balance the hoover on the stair with you as you clean.
2) no easy way to empty, have to unlatch the clip at the bottom and then get out of the way quick!
3) tool tidy is on the back of the handle so everytime you lower to start to use, they fall out on your foot oowwww! so annoying.
apart from that it does pick up ok.
